Georgia’s average score on the SAT college admissions exam fell for the second consecutive year, according to results released Aug. 26, 2008.
The state’s results dropped by six points to 1,466. But the national average held steady at 1,511 — 45 points higher than Georgia’s average, according to the College Board, which administers the test. A perfect score is 2,400.
Scores are provided by the College Board.

Parkview High honored for improvement in SAT scores

SUWANEE - Parkview High principal Charles “Buck” Buchanan credits the school’s success in raising students’ SAT scores to “total quality continuous improvement.”
The Lilburn school was one of 32 in Georgia to receive the Regional Governor’s Trophy Award for making the greatest improvement in SAT scores during the past three years. Parkview was one of eight Class AAAAA schools that won this year’s Governor’s Cup Challenge.
Parkview’s average SAT score of 1,575 is higher than Gwinnett County Public Schools’ average of 1,524. The state and national averages are 1,472 and 1,511, respectively.
“It’s not only our teachers and leaders within the school,” Buchanan said Thursday evening, as the Gwinnett County Board of Education recognized Parkview for the honor. “It’s our student body, and it’s our community, and it’s all of us working together.”
Several methods helped the school raise its average SAT score by 27 points in one year, Buchanan said. Parkview has tripled the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes. Teachers interpret students’ Preliminary SAT (PSAT) scores to identify areas of weakness and improve achievement on the college entrance exam. The school also provides a guided study class to provide all students with academic support.
“Most importantly, we have high expectations for everyone in our building - staff and students,” he said.
