Gwinnett County July 4th Celebrations

Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors:
In the face of declining revenues and the difficulty in raising sponsorship funds, Gwinnett County Government officials cancelled the annual Gwinnett Glows 4th of July celebration. Gwinnett Glows has been a fun community tradition for two decades, but the old adage “all good things must come to an end” is particularly apt in this case given the current state of the economy.
Even before the property tax protests that took place earlier this month, we knew we had to cut our expenses dramatically as new growth, development, and sales tax revenue declined during the recession. The same thing is happening to local governments across America. That’s why, prior to the adoption of the 2009 budget, commissioners and County staff launched an intensive study to find ways to cut the cost of County government by $40 million without eliminating vital services.
Cancelling Gwinnett Glows was one of the first cuts we made when the budget was approved last March. Despite the patriotic symbolism and long tradition, paying for fireworks and its associated costs on July 4 under the circumstances may not be viewed as prudent by many Gwinnett County residents. There have been - and will continue to be - more painful cuts as we struggle to balance the budget without eliminating vital services or raising property taxes.
The good news is that Gwinnett County residents still have a choice of other Independence Day celebrations taking place this year. Many of the events provide fun-filled festivities similar Gwinnett Glows, such as food, music, games, and, of course, fireworks.
Here are some places in Gwinnett County and around metro Atlanta where you and your loved ones can celebrate the independence of our great nation on July 4:
• Mall of Georgia
• Gwinnett Stadium (following Gwinnett Braves game)
• Stone Mountain Park
• Lenox Square
• Centennial Olympic Park
• Six Flags Over Georgia
A number of other events are held on July 3:
• Lawrenceville: Prelude to the Fourth in Lawrenceville
• Norcross: Pre-Independence Day Celebration
• Sugar Hill: Sparks in the Parks
The Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau maintains a calendar of events. Visit the GCVB website to find these and other Independence Day celebrations taking place in Gwinnett County.

Georgia Outdoor Water Use Update - June 2009
Share this post by email - 1 Comment - View And/Or Add A Comment »Governor Perdue announced today that due to significant rainfall and improved water supplies the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has issued a non-drought schedule for outdoor water use for the first time since June 2006.
The State of Georgia has returned to a non-drought schedule for outdoor water use. Under a non-drought schedule, outdoor water use is allowed three days a week on assigned days using odd and even-numbered addresses.
Odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Even-numbered and unnumbered addresses are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Outdoor watering is prohibited on Fridays.
Water use may occur at any time of the day on the assigned days, but to be water efficient, landscape watering should not occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The non-drought schedule is included in the Rules for Outdoor Water Use (PDF document) adopted by the Board of Natural Resources in 2004.

Gwinnett Solicitor Investigating BoC
Share this post by email - No Comments - Add A Comment »The Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office has opened an investigation related to two rezoning applications approved by the Gwinnett County BoC. Both cases involve recent rezoning votes by the BoC associated with solid waste transfer stations and campaign contributions made by the developers who benefited from these BoC votes.
The Gwinnett County planning department, planning commission and Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District had recommended denial for the rezoning requests. A group opposed to one of these projects along with nearby business owners, are currently challenging the board’s decision in Superior Court.
The Gwinnett County Solicitor’s Office is responsible for the prosecution of all State misdemeanor crimes in the State Court of Gwinnett County and all County ordinance violations (including traffic citations) in the Recorder’s Court of Gwinnett County.

Share this post by email - 1 Comment - View And/Or Add A Comment »…For now…
On Tuesday, June 2, 2009 the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted down their own proposed property tax increase.
The hour long public hearing that was held prior to the vote was the most verbose and heated of the three with an estimated 450 citizens in attendance.

June 3rd, 2009 at 8:50 AMCommissioner Lasseter was quoted as saying, “We appreciate hearing what you want to tell us, but let’s realize we are all in this together, and it’s only as a team in Gwinnett County we will make it through this economic downturn.”
Were “we” together when “we” decided to build a $60 million stadium? Nope, “we” had no say in the matter.
$60 million would go a long way in correcting this issue… Nope, sorry, that’s incorrect,… $60 million would have gone a long way in PREVENTING this issue…

This is cute. Perdue is either naive, stupid, on the take or all of the above if he believes that the people will conserve on their own. Lanier will be in trouble again before the end of spring.
