…Okay, maybe it’s just gang graffiti. This is a post I feel compelled to write - which I don’t like to do - just due to the number of e-mails I’ve received today and the unusually high number of visitors the website has received. This all being said, I really don’t have a whole lot to allow. Hopefully a few visitors will make replies.

I took digital photos of all of our new artwork and sent a few to Major Keybo Taylor, our GCPD precinct commander. His response was, “I will pass this on to Sgt. Cavender with the Gang Unit. We will contact someone to clean the streets up. Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.” I had asked some very specific questions that went unanswered.

I then went to the Gwinnett County website and poked around but found very little specific to gang activity. I also Googled for awhile and came up with the following (albeit not a lot):

Written by: Julie Wolfe

Gwinnett County’s new gang task force hits the streets this weekend. Twenty-five to thirty-five officers will be part of the county’s new enforcement strategy. The extra officers will be absorbed from the current gang task force and community response teams.

Corporal Illana Spellman says the move is not in response to a growing gang problem in Gwinnett County: ‘There was no specific incident, and no statistics to support gang activity on the increase,’ she said. ‘This is a new approach to an old problem.’

That new approach will include stepped up police presence in problem areas. The task force will also conduct investigations, gather evidence, and make arrests. It’s the county’s most comprehensive crackdown on gang activity in years.

Residents that spot signs of gang activity, like graffiti, are asked to call Gwinnett County police.

Gwinnett County Police Crime Suppression Unit

The Crime Suppression Unit is primarily responsible for providing support to the different precincts in their effort to combat criminal activity. When patterns of criminal activity are identified, these officers respond in force in a concentrated effort to identify and apprehend offenders. These officers are also responsible for the Department’s efforts to combat gang related criminal activity.

The DOT came by today and covered over our artwork.

I noticed one spot of graffiti on the Pounds Rd. sidewalk (near Corinth Cir.) which did not get cleaned up.

If you spot or hear of other areas that were marked up please submit details so that we can track.

  3. j.q.public Says:

F.Y.I. — The county came out and used black spray to cover the graffiti on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of Pounds Road at the intersection of Corinth Circle. A few days later a new batch of graffiti appeared in the same spot but this time white spray paint was used on the black cover. I used the online form on the Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful website to report it and the new graffiti spot was recovered by the county in white which actually looks better on the sidewalk.

Gwinnett County Health Department

Share this post by email - No Comments - Add A Comment »

I happened upon the Gwinnett County Health Department website and found it to be very useful. In addition to the general health information,… area hospitals, immunizations and how to manage your STDs, there is a very detailed section on restaurant health inspection reports. There is a form by which you can search for restaurant reports by name, address, city or zip code.

I put permanent links to these websites over here in the right sidebar –>

Somewhat related,… it recently came to my attention that there was a belief that the Metro Cafe at 1905 Rockbridge Road - Stone Mountain, GA 30087 was having health inspection issues. This is not true and is due to confusion with another restaurant in Snellville (I believe) with a similar name. Our Metro Cafe is receiving “A’s” on their health inspection reports which can be reviewed by clicking here.

Beaudreau Addresses The Commission Chair Race

Gwinnett Daily Post

Chairman Charles Bannister has Gwinnett’s top attorney in his corner, countering challenger Lorraine Green’s endorsement by the sheriff.

And Commissioner Mike Beaudreau is calling for the two to fight fair in the upcoming GOP runoff for county chairman, threatening to take sides if the fight gets ugly.

District Attorney Danny Porter, a popular, long-serving Republican, endorsed Bannister a week ago, just days before Bannister and Green squared off in the primary.

With third-place candidate Glenn Pirkle pulling in 10 percent of the vote, the two will once again face each other during the Aug. 5 runoff.

In a statement, Porter said he was concerned about Green’s close ties to Sheriff Butch Conway because he believes the county needs a police department answering to the Board of Commissioners for day-to-day crime prevention.

“One need only look to Clayton or Fulton County to see the folly of placing law enforcement responsibility in the hands of one person,” Porter wrote in the statement. “Butch Conway is a fine man and a fine sheriff, but even here in Gwinnett we have not always been so blessed. Even the possibility that the county police would be deprived of resources so that our law enforcement efforts would be diluted should be of great concern to any law-abiding citizen.”

Porter continued by saying Bannister has been an asset to the county’s law enforcement, initiating a unique program where a prosecutor has been assigned to a federal drug task force and encouraging cooperation between local and federal drug enforcement agencies.

“Bannister has demonstrated his commitment to public safety during his first term,” Porter wrote. “He has added officers to the Gwinnett County Police Department in order to meet national standards of accepted and recommended police manpower. To combat gangs which are primarily made up of illegal aliens, he has increased the gang unit to 30 police officers to more effectively protect our families. Bannister has been a leader in the fight against drug traffickers that are infiltrating our neighborhoods. He has provided the manpower to increase the size of the Gwinnett County Drug Task Force resulting in record arrests and record seizures of drug dealer assets. … Every city in Gwinnett has benefited from Bannister’s efforts in the battle against illegal drugs.”

Clean campaign

Beaudreau, who handily won the GOP primary for his commission seat last week, called for the pair to play nice after a campaign season full of negative ads and back-biting.

“Many of the voters I spoke with prior to the election told me they couldn’t figure out where the two candidates stood on the important issues that the county will face in the future,” Beaudreau said in a press release. “They were particularly dismayed by the false statements issued by Chairman Bannister, including his claims about Green’s pay raise and voting record on high density development.”

Beaudreau said he’d rather the candidates address issues such as taxes, illegal immigration, redevelopment and transportation so voters can decide who to support in the runoff.

“I have intended to stay out of the chairman’s race,” Beaudreau said. “However, we’ve seen a lot of negative campaigning and dirty tricks in the primary. If both candidates agree to this pledge and keep their word, I’ll stay out and endorse no one. If one candidate breaks this pledge, I will endorse the other candidate. Further, if one candidate agrees and the other refuses, I will endorse the one that agrees and work to bring a few thousand Gwinnett residents with me.”

Green was quick to say she would comply.

“The last few weeks of this past campaign were filled with vicious rumors and outright lies, so I appreciate the chance to get back to the issues most important to the voters of Gwinnett County,” she said in an e-mail. “They deserve answers. They deserve to hear the vision the elected leader of our county will provide, not a bunch of campaign rhetoric.”

Bannister did not return phone calls seeking comment Friday evening.

MPAA Senior League All-Stars

This is Sam Chambers I am the Manager of the MPAA Senior League all-star team. This past Monday July 14th our young men became Georgia State Champions in dramatic fashion. In the bottom of the 7th inning our team was down 7-4 with 2 outs and 2 men on base, a young man was able to keep a birthday promise to his sister by hitting a homerun and send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 8th inning one of my 19yr old players was able to extend his youth baseball career by hitting a 3 run walk off homerun to win the Georgia State Championship. We have now changed our name from Parkview to “Parkview - Team Georgia”. We will be heading to the World Series this Friday July 25th being held in Dyersburg, Tenn. As you can imagine, this will be at a tremendous monetary expense. We have collected many donations from individuals and businesses in the Parkview community, but we are still in need of support. The Waffle House on the corner of Indian Trail and Hwy 29 in Lilburn has offered to help. Beginning this Sunday July 20th and going through Thursday July 24th between the e hours of 2pm - 9pm Waffle house will give our team 10% of all sales!! This is a tremendous opportunity for our team to earn enough money to pay for all of our expenses for the World Series. I am asking everyone who can to please visit Waffle House during this time and help us go to the World Series to represent the Parkview community and the state of Georgia!

Thank you for supporting these young men!

-Sam Chambers
Manager, Parkview - Team Georgia

LAWRENCEVILLE - Stone Mountain’s revitalization efforts were recognized last week, when the city’s village was accredited as a 2008 National Main Street Program.

Main Street Stone Mountain joins about 700 other revitalization programs recognized with the honor for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center.

“We congratulate this year’s accredited National Main Street Programs for meeting our established performance standards,” said Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. “Rebuilding a district’s economic health and maintaining that success requires broad-based community involvement and support, in addition to establishing a solid organization with sound management that is committed to long-term success.”

The Village of Stone Mountain is located in the city of Stone Mountain one exit prior to Stone Mountain Park on U.S. Highway 78 East.

It was evaluated by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Office of Downtown Development.

“(Main Street Stone Mountain) has made great strides over the last year in laying the ground work for future revitalization,” said Steve Wells, director of Main Street Stone Mountain. “The streetscape projects is moving forward, the Tax Allocation District is nearing completion, and the façade grant program is almost in place, in addition to many other project that have been completed or are in the works. Stone Mountain is committed to revitalization and soon all the work behind the scenes will transform this downtown into one of the best locations in metro Atlanta.”
