Mountain Park Park Security Alert
Share this post by email - No Comments - Add A Comment »Greetings Mountain Park Patrons:
I wanted to notify you of several vehicle break-ins that we have had at the park this past spring. The MPAA board is working in conjunction with the Gwinnett County Park police and the local police precinct to try to catch the perpetrators and to prevent this criminal activity in the future. Hopefully, you will start to see an increased presence of uniform officers patrolling the park. If so, please thank them for their assistance. There are very few park police, and we must share them with all the other parks. We also need your assistance as well. Please be mindful when leaving your vehicle: lock your doors and do not leave your wallet or purse visible. Also, do not leave other valuable items such as cell phones, IPods, lap top computers, etc. visible. It is recommended that you place these items in your trunk before you get to the park. Most of these break-ins have been crimes of opportunity as the doors of the vehicle were either unlocked or valuable items were left out in the open.
Finally, please report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.
Thanks!
Chris Whitlock,
President MPAA (Mountain Park Athletic Association)

Stone Mountain in midst of $10 million upgrade
Atlanta Business Chronicle - by Anya Martin Contributing Writer
Stone Mountain Park, one of Atlanta’s oldest and one of the state’s most visited attractions, is in the midst of a $10 million upgrade and development effort as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The park has shown steady progress in cementing its status as a major destination venue since Norcross-based Herschend Family Entertainment Corp. (HFE) acquired a long-term lease to operate Stone Mountain Park in 1998. Over the years, the new operators have added several new features, including Crossroads, the Duck ride and the Family Barn, all part of a plan to revamp Stone Mountain Park.
As it celebrates two landmark anniversaries this year — its 50th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Lasershow Spectacular, the world’s longest running laser show — Stone Mountain Park is moving forward on plans to make sure it remains a force in the local hospitality industry. The park is launching a new $1 million Sky Hike attraction, soon to be the nation’s largest family adventure course in the treetops.
As part of this effort, Stone Mountain Park is revamping the world’s longest-running laser show with a completely digitally remastered soundtrack, new music, new graphics, an ultra-patriotic grand finale and a state-of-the-art fireworks display.

Coach Rainey Dies
Share this post by email - No Comments - Add A Comment »How many times have you seen a sign on a street corner that says, “Basketball Goals Installed By Coach Rainey”? You won’t be seeing them anymore. Coach E.L. Rainey passed away this past Monday at the age of 84. I grew up in Stone Mountain and graduated from Stone Mountain High School where he coached basketball. I didn’t play basketball but had him for P.E. and from what I remember he was misunderstood by most of the kids in my P.E. class. He could be a bit on the gruff side, but as I came to understand and appreciate, he was just trying to get the most and best out of each kid. I wish it hadn’t taken so long for me to get that. From what I gather he continued to live in Stone Mountain until his death.

Gwinnett County Solid Waste Plan For 2009
Share this post by email - 1 Comment - View And/Or Add A Comment »• Update - 11/07/08 - Gwinnett County Garbage Plan Announcement
The Board of Commissioners, in December 2007, approved a draft solid waste management plan for managing solid waste in Gwinnett County that will affect trash collection for most residents next year. State laws require an updated plan this year. Other agencies must now approve the draft plan that will go into effect in 2009.
The new contract-based system will go into effect in late 2009. The County’s designee will establish eight service areas and use a public, competitive process to contract with one hauler for each service area based on proposals they submit. A single hauler could be awarded a contract to provide service in up to three service areas.
All residents will be required to participate in garbage and recyclable collection. Weekly pickups will include garbage, 35 recyclables, and all large items. Yard waste may be optional or included in the fee. Haulers will be required to provide standardized collection carts. Residents will have the convenience of paying the service fee once a year on their tax bill, and senior citizen discounts will be available.
The new system is claiming the following benefits:
* More efficient and cost effective services
* More recycling opportunities (35 recyclables)
* Decreased traffic in neighborhoods
* Less noise and air pollution
* Less wear and tear on roads
* Less illegal dumping
* Improved service delivery
* Better customer service
* Large item pickup
* Yard waste pickup (may be optional service)
Homeowners will no longer pay trash companies directly. Instead, a service fee for garbage and recycling services will be billed once a year on the County property tax bill beginning in 2009. Most rates are expected to decrease due to increased efficiencies, but individual rates could go up or down. Garbage and recycling services will be mandatory for all homes in Gwinnett County.

Citizens currently contract directly with an approved and licensed hauler of their choice for pickup of household garbage, trash, and recyclables. Eight companies (listed below) are approved and licensed to provide these services until December 31, 2008:

678.328.1650Waste Management of Atlanta - Limited Areas
404.794.6707Waste Pro of Georgia *
770.777.1447*Serve all areas of the County
On March 25, 2008, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved Red Oak Sanitation’s application upon the conditions that the company provides solid waste collection and disposal services for any resident desiring such services in the service areas for which the company has been approved and granted a franchise by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. Red Oak must immediately reinstate such services for any resident in the company’s approved service areas whose services has been discontinued by the company if the resident desires such reinstatement.
The application of Quality Waste Disposal Services was denied by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners because the company will be acquired by Waste Pro of Georgia effective April 1, 2008. Quality Waste Disposal Services can continue operations until March 31, 2008. Current customers of Quality Waste Disposal Services should call 770.490.7088 if they have questions.

Stone Mountain Wine Tours

Gwinnett Daily Post
LAWRENCEVILLE - A little wine goes a long way.
Stone Mountain Village is hoping the offer of some free fermented grapes will bring people to a Walk and Wine Tour on Saturday on the town’s main street.
Steve Wells, the executive director of Main Street Stone Mountain, said about 200 people came to the event in April. The tour is held from 6 to 8 p.m. the third Saturday of each month, but after a June tour, the event will be taking the summer off. It will resume in September.
“It’s a great opportunity to check out what’s in the village, the shops there,” Wells said. “It’s a way to get people downtown to see what’s available.”
Wells said many of the stores close before 6 p.m., so having them stay open later will expose people to the options in the area. The wine at each store will be available at Stone Mountain restaurants and some of the shops will have hors d’oeuvres, too. Participating retailers will have balloons outside their doors and sales on merchandise.
Depending on how long people spend shopping, Wells said they could get through the tour in an hour.
If the weather is nice, he said, he expects a lot of people to come downtown.
“Last month was really good,” Wells said. “Pretty much, everything I heard was positive.”
The Village of Stone Mountain is one exit prior to Stone Mountain Park on U.S. Highway 78 East. For more information regarding Main Street Stone Mountain, call 770-498-7334 or visit www.stonemountainvillage.com.

Delay Requested For Park Place Complex

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/13/08
A proposed hotel and retail complex in Gwinnett’s Park Place community near Stone Mountain likely won’t be considered by the Planning Commission tonight as originally planned.
A representative of the developer has asked commissioners to delay consideration of the project for a couple of months.
Planning Commissioner Chuck Warbington, whose district includes the project, said he is “leaning toward” postponing consideration of the project but will not make up his mind until tonight.
The commission typically agrees with district commissioners’ requests on such issues.
If the hearing is delayed as expected, Greg Sportsman of the Hobgood Group said he and others involved in the project hope to continue meeting with residents to work out a plan they can get behind.
Numerous residents told Sportsman two weeks ago that the 80-room, high-end hotel and retail complex at Rockbridge Road and West Park Place Boulevard was a poor choice for the area, which backs up to a subdivision.
Others believe there’s room to modify the proposal to create a development more amenable to residents.
Sportsman said ideas range from expanding the landscaping buffer behind the property, to adding walking paths to make the pro- ject more accessible to nearby residents, to eliminating the hotel entirely.
He said he wanted the delay to allow more time to meet with residents.
The project will be given a new hearing date at the Planning Commission meeting, which starts at 7 tonight.

This is in regards to establishing a CVS on the corner of Killian Hill and Arcado. There was a meeting a couple weeks ago, hundreds showed up, but the vote was tabled until this month. The lawyer for the builder says it WILL happen. I hope not! We don’t need another place to buy medicine and sodas! Especially not on that corner.

From Nancy Kenny, Nantucket Resident and former Planning Commission member:
I think it well said and puts an exclamation point to the need for all of us to stay watchful.
“I spoke with Lilburn’s planner and he had met with the applicants regarding the rezoning. I asked what they were changing and he said they were adding some walks and benches plus trees to make the project more green and more user friendly. The CVS will stay as it is the “most important part of the project” and the huge reduction in buffers also will have to stay as without them the whole thing is not workable. I am never for reducing buffers between differing zonings so would definitely not have voted for this when I was on the Planning Commission. We must show up and voice our opposition”.

Gwinnett Daily PostSTONE MOUNTAIN - A scarcely attended meeting called by the Gwinnett County Police Department Thursday night didn’t stop a few of the county’s top cops from stressing the importance of teen safety as graduation season nears.
A presentation by a team of officers addressed several topics - speeding, drugs, alcohol and rape - that officials hope parents in attendance don’t keep to themselves.
“Even with this short number here, if each and every one of you guys go back and spread this message to 10 more people, then ask them to spread it to 10 more people, eventually we’ll get it out there,” said Maj. Keybo Taylor, district commander for Gwinnett police’s south precinct. “We’ll continue to get it going in the right direction.”
Only about 10 people came out to the Voices of Faith Baptist Church in Stone Mountain for the hourlong presentation. Officials say it’s the first of several meetings aimed at promoting teen safety and sound decision-making.
Cpl. Stuart Bozman, who has worked in the department’s accident investigation unit, showed several slides containing graphic images of alcohol-induced fatal wrecks throughout the county. Many of the instances led to stiff prison sentences for young drivers.
“The most important thing we want your sons and daughters to know is buckle-up, focus on their driving - not the distractions - and staying sober and not drinking and driving,” he said.
A mother of a 16-year-old, who lives in a neighborhood near the church and requested to not be identified, said she attended to learn more about what she can do to keep her son away from drugs and alcohol.
“I think they are fascinated and curious and they want a little excitement,” she said. “I mean, they’ve been tramping through the woods and subdivision since they were little, and now this is exciting to find other stuff to do, and so we’re just finding that we need to keep a tighter rein.”
