Two men were shot late Wednesday afternoon, one fatally, outside a Stone Mountain apartment complex.

Police arrived at the Highland Grove complex off Glenn Club Drive around 5:30 p.m. to find one person dead and another seriously wounded with a gunshot wound to the head, said Gwinnett County police spokesman David Schiralli. Neither man had been identified late Wednesday.

The dead man was found in the passenger seat of a gold Acura while the shooting victim was discovered lying outside the car, Schiralli said. The wounded man was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where his condition was not available Wednesday evening.

Investigators are trying to determine who shot the men and why. Anyone with information can contact Gwinnett County police at 770-513-5300.

STONE MOUNTAIN - Two bloody high-top sneakers and a pool of blood marked the epicenter of a deadly parking lot shooting Wednesday night in Stone Mountain.

Gwinnett police said two black men were shot in the head about 5 p.m. outside an apartment in the sprawling Highland Grove complex. Crime scene investigators cordoned off a large section of the parking lot between two housing rows, working the scene late into Wednesday night.

The apartments are located at 1900 Glenn Club Drive.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at the complex and found one man slumped in the driver’s seat of a gold Acura. He died at the scene, police said.

Another man was found bleeding about 10 feet away from the vehicle, said Gwinnett police spokesman Officer David Schiralli. Witnesses reported hearing him call out for help.

The injured man was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where his condition was unknown late Wednesday, Schiralli said.

Witnesses reportedly saw two men fleeing the scene.

Schiralli said the two men who were shot were not residents of the apartment complex.

Both victims had yet to be identified as of press time.

Schiralli said circumstances surrounding the shooting remained a mystery.

“We have an investigator right now canvassing the area, looking for more witnesses, more leads,” Schiralli said at the scene.

    STONE MOUNTAIN - Police withheld the name Thursday of a South Carolina man who was shot in the head while visiting a Stone Mountain apartment complex.

    But police identified a second victim as Dedric Daquan Thompson, 28, also of South Carolina. Thompson - who was also shot in the head about 5 p.m. Wednesday - died at the scene.

    The unnamed man remained in stable condition at Gwinnett Medical Center on Thursday. He is expected to survive his injuries, said Gwinnett police spokesman Officer David Schiralli.

    His identity was withheld Thursday because his assailant - or assailants - was still at large.

    It was unclear what prompted the shooting or why the men were in Stone Mountain, Schiralli said.

    Both men were found in a parking area of the Highland Grove apartment complex. Thompson died slumped over in the passenger seat of a gold Acura, while the survivor was found about 10 feet away in a pool of blood, police said.

    Witnesses reported hearing the wounded man call out for help.

    The apartments are located at 1900 Glenn Club Drive. Residents told police two men fled the scene in a vehicle, police said.

    “The circumstances surrounding this incident are still unknown,” Schiralli said. “This is an ongoing investigation.”
